Dr. Darryl Hill, a lecturer and director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Oakland University and senior vice president for safety and security at First Student, Inc. — North America’s largest provider of school bus transportation — has been selected by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) as the 2025 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award is BSCP’s highest honor and is presented to an individual in recognition of an outstanding career of service to the profession and a lifetime of dedication to the craft.

“The BCSP Lifetime Achievement Award is personally gratifying and an acknowledgement of the dedication and passion I've invested the past 40 years to advance safety, health, and the protection of people,” Dr. Hill said. “I've devoted my life to a great profession and the recognition allows me to reflect on the many colleagues, teams, and friends I've worked with during my career.”

A past president of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and an ASSP Fellow, Dr. Hill has taught at Oakland University since 1996. He is a former member of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Board of Scientific Counselors and a previous recipient of the National Safety Council’s Distinguished Services to Safety Award.

In additional to selecting Dr. Hill as the 2025 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, the BCSP also announced the 2025 recipients of its Awards of Excellence, which recognize BCSP credential holders in the categories of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Safety Management Professional (SMP). This year's recipients include:

• CSP Award of Excellence: Matthew Herron, MS, PE, CSP, CPE, a BCSP Ambassador and ASSP Regional Vice President, Lead Safety Engineer for the Mechanical Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute.

• SMP Award of Excellence: Georgi Popov, Ph.D., CSP, QEP, SMP, ARM, CMC,

“The BCSP Awards have always gone above and beyond professional skill and competence,” said BCSP CEO Christy Uden, CAE, IOM. “They identify those inspirational leaders who genuinely elevate safety, health, and environmental practice and influence other to pursue safety excellence. This year’s recipients meet that mark in every sense.”

The awards will be presented during a virtual ceremony at noon on Tuesday, May 20. If you would like to view the ceremony, you can register online here.
